Kittens require higher nutrition and calories for growth and energy.
Kittens' waking hours are filled with activity. A newly weaned kitten's diet requires up to twice the calories, protein and fat content as an adult.

Seniors: encourage activity, discourage weight gain.
Lower fat and calories are desirable for older cats, the opposite of kittens. Senior cats' digestive systems are less able to derive nutrition from their food, necessitating more easily digested food higher in nutrients. Nutritional deficiencies are often reflected in poor coats and muscle tone.
