QUESTION:

I have a 3 year Cockapoo who ever since we had some family come with their male dog, and then on New Years day my son brought over their male dog and these dogs have urinated on my carpeting!! Our dog Max defecated once but has been urinating in our living room since then. He goes to the same spots and I can't have that! Behavioral or health? Please help.

ANSWER:

Hello Joyce!

It sounds like you have a behavioral problem on your hands. It is very common for dogs to go back to the same location that has been previously soiled. There is a scent that is left behind that even if you can't smell it, they can!

It is very important to use a cleaning product with enzymes in it that will break down the odor and remove both the scent you can smell, and what they can smell. There are many options available such as Nature's Miracle, Anti-Icky Poo, and Simple Solutions Stain and Odor Remover. All three work the same way.

After blotting up the soiled area, saturate the carpet with the cleaning product, making sure that the padding under the carpet is soaked as well. It is better to use too much than not enough. Walk away and allow the product to dry on its own. Depending on the humidity level in your house this may take a day or two. It is during the drying process that the enzymes are breaking down the odor and removing all scents.

If it is possible to keep your dog, Max, away from the afflicted areas during this process it will help him break the habit as well.

This should help to put Max back on track to his normal bathroom behavior!
