QUESTION:

I have a 2.5yr old chocolate lab (70 lb) and am seeking advice on food.

He is currently eating 2.5 cups (2x day) of CANIDAE All Stages Formula (Chicken, Turkey, Lamb & Fish Meal), but I feel he doesn't digest it well - his first poop of the day is firm, but then it is runny/soft later on. Additionally, he is always seeking food and tries to eat poop. Is this too much protein for my dog? When he eats poop he gets awful diarhea and we have to use Science Diet Prescription to firm him up.

Also, just FYI before canidae he was on IAMS ProActive Health Large Breed, but he seemed to have an allergy to it. We don't have allergy problems with CANIDAE currently.

He gets revolution once monthly, so he should be fine with parasites, etc.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!

ANSWER:

Mark,

Thank you for contacting me regarding your lab and his digestive issues.

I would suggest going to a more simple formula since it seems he is not digesting the Canidae very well. There are a few good foods that have very limited ingredients. Natural Balance, California Natural and Wellness Simple Solutions are a few. All of these foods can be used for dogs with allergies as well.

As far as eating poop, we do have a supplement that you can add to your dogs food so that he will not eat his own poop. It is from Solid Gold and is called SEP.
