QUESTION:

My dog was just diagnosed with diabetes and receives two injections of 2 units of Vetsulin daily. She is 9 years old, and has eaten Ol Roy all her life, and of course people food of all kinds. Now I have to regulate her diet and I cannot find a dog food (dry or soft) that she will eat. Can you recommend one?

ANSWER:

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the question. There are several options for feeding a dog with diabetes. There are a couple of factors to consider when choosing a food. The first being the age and weight of the dog. As well as what the dog could potentially be eating between meals.

When choosing a food, you will want to pick a food that is fiber rich, low in sugar and salt. A couple of the dry foods that we carry that I would recommend include the Solid Gold Holistique, Canidae Platinum, Canine Caviar Special Needs, Blue Buffalo Longevity Senior and Precise Senior.

The canned food that I would recommend include Halo, Evangers, Weruva, Merrick cans (low glycemic varieties - Working Dog Stew, Wild Buffalo Stew, Turducken, Thanksgiving Day Dinner, Smothered Comfort, Grammy's Pot Pie, & Cowboy Cookout).

Diet control is key to managing diabetes and helping the dog lead a long happy, healthy life. If possible, try to avoid giving the dog any people food, as well as limiting the amount and type of treats that the dog is given throughout the day. As with any health issue, please make sure that you keep your vet informed and involved with the treatment and choices that are made.

Thanks for the opportunity to share information.
