QUESTION:

Hi. my name is chloe. I have a 2year old pekapom. She sleeps in her kennal at night. latley she has been waking me up to go potty 2 to 4 times a night. during the day though she doesnt seem to go freequently. im wondering of maybe she crys at night to come into our bed. I have let her a couple times. if she sleeps with us she doesnt get up at night. what do you think? do you think she may have a bladder inf? or maybe shes just playing us?! thank you so much   Chloe

ANSWER:

While urinating frequently is a symptom of a bladder infection, other signs include cloudy urine, bloody or foul-smelling urine, urinating indoors and licking the genital area.  If any of these other signs are present you should definitely take your pekapom to the vet to have a bladder infection ruled out.  Especially if this is a recent behavior development, there could be an underlying symptom.

It's also possible she has figured out how to get a desired response from certain behaviors, and then repeat those behaviors.  Since the need to go out doesn't happen when she is allowed in your bed, it's entirely possible that she initiates the waking of you at night in hopes that she will again be allowed to sleep in bed with you.

Go back to the puppy steps before kenneling at night and restrict her water intake an hour before bed and let her out one last time before kenneling up for the night.  Then comes the difficult part -  ignore the behavior in the middle of the night.  If she has an accident in her kennel, then head for the vet.  Otherwise, a few consistent nights of ignoring the undesired behavior will more often than not get rid of it.

Hope these tips help you out..
