| QUESTION:
Hi. We have a wire fox terrier, and have been battling with allergies. We have had her on a "special" diet for about a year, and not giving her any wheat products. Unfortunately, she is still suffering. She is extremely itchy, and is actually has some areas of thinning hair. We have not been able to pin-point what it is that she is allergic to. Do you know of any diets specific for wire fox terriers? Or, are there some brands of food that have a good track record for dogs with food allergies? Thanks |
| ANSWER:
Hi Linda, We deal with this particular question very often and there are a few different suggestions that I have for customers with the common allergy problem. One thing to remember about nutrition is that dogs can react to any protein source that is in the diet. While avoiding wheat is a good start I would recommend looking at the other ingredients in the diet as well. Rice, oatmeal, barley and even the meat protein source can cause reactions in pets if they are truly allergic to them. To start with you should look at a food with fewer ingredients. California Natural, Natural Balance and Wellness Simple Solutions are examples of foods with one protein source and one carbohydrate source. Using this type of diet enables you to see what combination of ingredients your dog responds to. These foods are all nutritionally balanced and contain every vitamin and mineral a dog needs. I would also recommend that you keep all extra treats and consumables out of the diet so that you know if food is causing the allergies. Thank you! "The Chuck" |
