QUESTION:

I have been purchasing the Wellness super 5 complete health dog food for my 20 lb Pug / rat terrier dog. Every year however, he gets allergies where he itches his skin and actually bleeds in a few spots. Wondering if the food I'm using is the best food for this condition or if I should try something else? New Simple Wellness food? Canidae food? Natural Balance? Or any others? Any specific tablets I should also consider to help with his allergies?

Thanks

ANSWER:

Hi Todd,

It sounds like the your dog may have seasonal allergies. The HomeoPet Skin and Seborrhea formula is an effective, natural way to relieve seasonal allergies. Just follow the dosing instructions one the box. If you need something stronger, you may need to go to your vet.

As for food, Wellness is an excellent brand. If you suspect your dog may have food allergies as well as seasonal allergies, you may want to try Wellness Simple Solutions, Natural Balance allergy formulas or California Natural. All of these foods are limited ingredient diets and will eliminate most potential allergens. If you can stabilize your dog on one of these foods, you can then add foods back into his diet to see what triggers the allergies.

One other food option is the raw diet. All Chuck & Don's carry raw frozen and dehydrated raw foods. It has been suggested that raw food can reduce food and seasonal allergy symptoms by strengthening your dog's immune system.

Thank you!
