QUESTION:

I am planning on adding a 3rd fuzzy friend - a Maltese - to my house. I am looking for a great dog food for a small breed. I have read a Maltese can be picky and should avoid beef. I would like a brand that has a puppy blend and then an adult small breed to switch over to. I have 2 goldens right now - who eat Premium Edge (one's on healthy weight and the other skin and coat formula) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. A small dog is a whole new adventure for me and I want him to be healthy and happy.

Thanks a bunch.

ANSWER:

There are not too many "small breed" puppy foods out there but I do have a few suggestions. One of which is Wellness Puppy, it is a similar to what you are currently feeding your Golden's. Wellness has 3 proteins chicken, turkey and fish along with fruits and vegetables. It's a well balanced food and when you get to the adult stage should you choose, there's a "Small Breed" food with the same ingredients.

Another suggestion is Go Natural. Again it has chicken, turkey and fish along with fruits and vegetables, but this food does not have a "Small Breed" formula however for adulthood. A few other suggestions along the same ingredients are Merrick Puppy plate, Chicken Soup for the Puppy's Soul and a little simpler food with just a chicken and rice base is Nutri Source small & Medium breed puppy.

It is not necessary to feed your smaller breeds a "Small Breed" formula. You should just watch so your protein levels don't get too high. Your smaller breeds can't process higher protein like you medium to larger breeds can. There are more that I could name off but those are a few for you to try.
